The DCSS High School/High Tech was organized the summer of 1997. It
is an educational enrichment program for high school students with disabilities who are interested in pursuing careers in science, technology and engineering. It is designed to develop career opportunities
and provide activities that will spark an interest in high technology fields and encourage students to pursue higher education. The program incorporates a
mix of learning experiences that include: Science Exploration, Paid summer internships, and Mentoring.
Outcomes of this program include providing youth with disabilities early
opportunities to explore technology career fields, post-secondary education, and empower them to enter professions in science, math, engineering, and technology related fields.
Through a local Albany, GA collaborative, established by Albany ARC consisting of: Albany Advocacy Resource Center (Albany ARC),Albany Business Leadership Network, Albany State University, Albany Technical
College, Darton College, Dougherty County School System,Georgia Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, Georgia Department of LaborWIA, and Georgia DOL/ Rehabilitation Services.
Students with disabilities are selected from the four local public high schools and the following courses are taught: • 9th grade—-General Science •10th grade—Physical Science •11th grade—Biology
•12th grade—Computer Science & Technology
The DCSS High School/High Tech Program provides an educational enrichment opportunity and exploration into Occupational Training for the
HS/HT Students through a Micro-Enterprise established in the spring of 2005. Currently the HS/HT Program includes Entrepreneurship Classroom Training conducted by the local UGA Business Outreach Services & Small
Business Development Center.
The Micro-Enterprise began operations the 2nd semester of the 2004-2005 school year. The business selected by the HS/HT students is called “Logo
-Link”—Westover Campus Store housed at Westover High School where the HS/HT Program is currently based. “Logo-Link” makes available the following merchandise and services to the WHS student and faculty
population: all specialized items with school mascot/school colors—similar to a typical collegiate store—and school supplies. Operating hours are before and after school; as well as during the lunch hour.
